Motion Assignment

For my first assignment, the Motion Assignment, I wanted to focus on a theme surrounding cars and the CU Boulder Racing Team as it is something I am passionate about. As this is a theme I enjoy working on, I plan on continuing this assignment throughout the semester to try and better learn how to work with long exposure photos and timelapses.

Having been out of Boulder and in Oklahoma from Wednesday afternoon until mid-Sunday morning, the time I had to complete this project was very limited. Knowing that, I pre-planned and ensured I had some friends at our race shop that could help with the photos after our work meeting.

My goal for this project was to capture the movement and motion associated with working on cars. The result was not as I originally intended due to limitations with shutter speed due to not having an ND filter. Despite that I am happy with how the shots of the grinding wheel and the ghostly figures created by the long shutter speeds.

Some of the photos show one of the team members working on grinding off the temporary steel roof we installed on the car for the last race – which happened to be in the rain – and then continuing to cut it up in the shop. The other set of photos shows other members moving one of the race cars back into the shop while the one-off photo shows a wide view of the shop with members doing various tasks.
